at crosspurposes with calculus by ~Synalle:iconSynalle:

there are those times
when I’m connected to the math
              and it means universes (multiverses, even)
                                    spinning proton shells
                                    the fractal of social interaction
                                    —life.
and there are others
when one and one and one and seven
              and cosecant or arcsine of e
              pi of a logarithm, natural or manmade
              means…
                                    well
                                    maybe if I took the integral of yesterday
                                    I’d get a more real answer.
Perhaps it is a writer’s freedom
to say that the square root of negative one
              exists, and to spin
              webs of dreaming with its lovely irrationality
              or
                                    to carve it into a Pygmalion
                                    to raise it like a drowned Icarus, flying home to Minos
                                    to suspend it, hot, above a sleeping Eros’ cheek
if only in my mind.

I was in the airport. I was frustrated with calculus. But since my morning started at 6 AM, I was also more than a bit dreamyish. I don't know, so don't look at me.

Btw, the title is really
"at cross-purposes with calculu∫"

^^ This pleases me immensely. I'm not sure why... but I just love it. I'm putting a copy on the front of my calc binder next year, yes I am...

Was the separation of e from life meant to make me think of e?

From "Perhaps" through to the end is my favorite section. I think that's part of my reasons for writing... for making the imaginary i into the very real I and other such nonsense. Beautiful, dear. You should wake at six and go to the airport more often.
:iconmotai:
:D Great stuff. So many great allusions I don't know where to start. The mythological references also added to it, but for me it was the clever usag e of the natural logarithmic base. :)
:iconsynalle:
That's all dA's fault (I didn't split up life and maybe originally) but I think I'll keep it.
:iconsynalle:
Thanks ^^ As mentioned below, the e-separation is accidental, but I'll keep the one in "life". And this is why writing and artistry fulfils, more than a lot of things. (A lot of things can be turned into artistry, too, but many things are made rote by school....)
:iconarianperegrine:
tis most shiny. I think I shall do as Deirdra is... except that I'm taking precal... oh well... just add a "pre" in front of it, right? heheh... You know I like.

Pygmalion... Icarus... Eros...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*cowers from Ovid*

--
Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

In order to be great, you must overcome yourself.
:iconsynalle:
Yes, I did that just for you. I don't know that he wrote a Cupid and Psyche, but it's definitely his style.
:iconarianperegrine:
thanks ever so... did he write a cupid and psyche?

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

:iconsynalle:
From all I can tell, Cupid and Psyche isn't an Ovid story (isn't contained in his Metamorphoses, Ovid referenced as an influence on the story, etc). "The tale of Cupid and Psyche is told in the Metamorphoses of Apuleius. " Yea. So.
:iconarianperegrine:
*shudders* WE'RE DONE!!!!!! no more latin... until next year. yay for APs... but summer first. definitly.
